This is a community dedicated to Chinese novels and media related to these novels (e.g., audio dramas, audio books, donghua adaptations, etc.). Most of the focus will be on Chinese webnovels, but if you'd like to discuss, e.g., a Chinese SFF novel, please feel free!

Requests, news, discussions, meta, reviews, recommendations, thoughts, questions all welcome. Fanworks, your fantranslations, relevant events, all great too~

It's likely things will evolve as time passes, as the community gets more of a feel of what people wants to see, or if there's specific things that needs to be changed, so I will update this post as we go too.

Rules and guidelines for posting and commenting:

1. Please don't hardcode colours or font types & sizes in your entries. This sometimes makes it hard for people to read in their own style.
2. Please fill the subject line, and use headers.
2.1 Content warnings are appreciated when recommending a title (e.g., ableism, rape, gore, racism/xenophobia, etc.).
3. Please member-lock all entries containing media downloads.

7. Please be respectful to other community members.
8. Feel free to cross-post!
9. If your posts includes NSFW material, whatever that may be, adjust the post's age restriction. The default is no restriction.

Been really busy packing to move countries (I am flying end of next week), and I have to make some hard decisions about books to keep and books to give away.

So, this week's question (not specific to cnovels) is, what is your habit when it comes to books?

Do you hoard, or do you spring clean and give away often? If you have to pare down your bookshelf to ten books, can you? And how will you make that decision?

(also, for my reference, if you have moved countries before, what did you do with your books?)

I was just recently on a three day long train trip, which got me thinking:

1) if you were to go on a three day long train trip, are there any cnovel characters you would like to be your travel buddies? And who do you think will be a terrible travel buddy, and why?

2) if you have read any novels involving train travel that you enjoyed, what role did that train/train travel play in the novel?

Any other train related comments, all good too!

I was wondering, where do y'all buy physical books in Chinese? My preferred source recently disappeared, and I'm hoping to find something more affordable than sources I've used before. I'm in the US, but I figure that as long as people say where they are when they answer, a post like this could make a decent resource for those of us interested in purchasing physical volumes in Chinese. We can use whichever parts are relevant to our own purchasing needs/desires?

Places I've used (in no particular order):

Heartbeat Anime: this was my preferred source, but they've disappeared. I noticed they were gone right after the US tariffs were announced, though I don't know if that's why. Link is to their defunct website.

Koon Books: has been solid and reliable for me, but shipping costs are extremely high.

Books TW: Taiwanese bookstore. Shipping is high, and I'm not always sure how to tell what's in traditional vs. what's in simplified (and I'm not ready to really tackling learning traditional yet, though I've been starting a little as I'm in a group where people use both).

Shandian GO: a Canada-based group order that I've used a lot, but they're more merchandise focused.

Taobao: not linking specific shops because I can't get it to work right on my computer without a VPN. Using Taobao from a US ISP has always been challenging and now it's even harder; when I've ordered from them, I had a friend in Beijing order the books and they were shipped to her, then I paid her back and she brought them to me next time she was in the US.

Kinokuniya: I've never ordered online from them; I shop at their physical store in New York City. Obviously they're Japanese-book focused, but they've been branching out; I was able to get the TGCF art book from them, and they carry the TGCF manhua in Chinese as well. I'm hoping they'll keep adding more. They have way more books in Chinese on their webpage than they do in store. Not sure how much is traditional vs. simplified; the text on their webpage is traditional

Eastern Book Store NYC: again, I've never used their website; I go to their physical store when I'm in New York City. They definitely have things in-store that aren't on their webpage (like, I just checked priest - their website has Zhenhun but not Youfei, which I've seen while there.)

Via Lactea: sort of cheating, in that this is a Canada-based publisher who print books in Chinese, so the only books they have are the ones they publish. I've also gotten everything they've published in English.

Amiami: I've not ordered books from them, but they do carry at least a few books in Chinese I think? I've used them for merch as well.

From all of the above, my orders have always gone well and I've received virtually everything I've bought, except for one instance where Customs impounded a shipment that included some ShandianGO stuff (they weren't the target of the impound but were packaged in the same bulk shipment). Places tend to package really well, and shipping costs tend to range from "high" to "ludicrous." I'm happy to say more about my own experiences if anyone would like more info about any of the above.

Where have you ordered from, and how have things gone?

Editing to add recommendations from the comments:
Funimecity - has books and manhua, mostly related to danmei and fandom.

Cjb Bookstore on Aliexpress - currently has no shop listings, possibly related to new US tariff possibilities.

Ningbo Yingtong on Aliexpress - mixed selection of Chinese books, and also has some danmei in English.

Superbuy - an intermediary for US buyers looking to shop Taobao and other Chinese retailers.

Spreenow - another Taobao intermediary.

Ueishang
- Taiwanese publisher that one can purchase from direct.

Also, conversations reminded me of this Tumblr post by Shijiujun, which has a lot of resources and is how I first found Books TW. It has some other sources, too.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!

Time for Discussion Friday again!

Let's talk about modern setting/contemporary novels!

Do you read them? Why/why not? What kind of contemporary setting novels do you enjoy (e.g., showbiz, e-sports, school setting, etc.)?

And if you have not read any, do you read modern setting/contemporary novels in other languages?

From [tumblr.com profile] onthearrow on Tumblr, re a recent cinematic political thriller turned suddenly topical by current events:

The Conclave fandom on Twitter appears to be in a crisis of tone (and whether its appropriate to be posting priest yaoi rn) and it’s the most entertaining thing I’ve seen in fandom this year.

I wrote an extremely useless piece of advice on the above here, based largely around 'know enough Chinese and know enough Chinese poetry'. Come tell me how unhelpful it is and/or share your poetry-inspired character names.

Slightly off subject, but a mod suggested this was okay so here goes.

While I do read sometimes pick my way through c-novels in the original (not nearly as much as I do in translation), most of my Chinese reading focus is actually classical poetry, with an emphasis on the Tang Dynasty. One of my ongoing projects is 唐诗三百首, 300 Tang Poems, but I've also been having fun wandering through the miscellaneous themed books at the back of 全唐诗, Complete Tang Poems, such as the two books of poems by ghosts. My most recent such foray was into the section of 谐谑, banter/repartee, iow poems of humor and mockery, though after managing to hack my way through a handful I beat a retreat.

The spoils of my raid are here, and the index of all translations (though many are outdated early drafts) is over there.

Now that I've read all of it, I want to rec Reading the Remnants (问棺) by Qi Xiao Huang Shu (七小皇叔)!

some mild spoilers )

The main story has 108 chapters and there are four extras (two of the extras are posted in two parts) as well as an afterward by the author.

The original is posted here on Gongzicp. There are two English fan translations of it: a complete one by Pale Mirror and a partial one by earless tls.

Time for Discussion Friday again!

This time, inspired by my very rapid descent into a Chinese otome game that tried to be culturally sensitive by translating "哥哥" (older brother*) into "childhood friend" in English, what are your thoughts and feelings about incest/pseudo-incest in fiction?

If you enjoy it, why do you enjoy it?

If you find it uncomfortable, is it for all incest/pseudo-incest related tropes, or are there situations where you are more likely to be okay with them and situations where it's a squick?

(Feel free to share any other related thoughts. I trust you all to be respectful to each other's preferences in fiction!)

*brother, very loosely, because it is not always someone related.
